After finishing medical school and residency in General Surgery at the Innsbruck Medical University, Stefan Schneeberger was appointed A. o. Univ. Professor at the Dept. of General and Transplant Surgery at this institution in 2006. In 2007 he was appointed Research Assistant Professor of Surgery at the Division of Plastic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh to be the Director of the Composite Tissue Allotransplantation Program.

Among the original scientific contributions are the first classification of rejection in human hand transplantation, the report on the world’s first forearm transplantation, the first description of a novel, atypical rejection, the first publication describing a 5-year outcome after hand transplantation, the first description of the use of Campath-1H to treat rejection in hand transplantation and the first observation of the relevance of CMV infections in hand transplantation. Among the rewards received are the Biotest award from the European Society for Organ Transplantation, the Biotest Austrotransplant award and the Young investigator award by the American Society of Transplantation.

Dr. Schneeberger was the Co-Chairman at the 7th International Symposium on Composite Tissue Allotransplantation in Seefeld in Sept. 2007 (together with Prof. Dr. R. Margreiter) and served as the Program Chair of the 1st American Conference on Reconstructive Transplant Surgery. Stefan Schneeberger was elected to be the first President of the American Society for Reconstructive Transplantation by the Executive Board on July 28 2008.
